My name is Paul Raistrick. I'm the founder of Locus Venture Partners.
A few years ago, I started building a system to solve problems using AI. Not by relying on AI to do the thinking, but by understanding how to apply it systematically. That system became Locus OS.
It worked well for me. I could evaluate tools clearly, identify where AI applied, build what needed building. Over time I developed real depth in three areas: building local, private AI systems that keep everything on your own devices, experimenting with cloud-based tools to understand what actually works versus what is marketed to work, and engineering agents.
It came from reading about AI, building with it, getting things wrong, and understanding why.
What I Kept Seeing When I Helped Others
The more I worked with other people on their AI problems, the more I noticed the same pattern.
It was not that the tools were unavailable. It was not that people were not intelligent or motivated. It was that they had no foundation for how to think about AI, no mental model for what it actually is, no map of the landscape of approaches, and no systematic way of figuring out where it applied to their specific situation.
Without those three things, they were guessing. Reaching for tools that did not fit the problem. Getting mediocre results and concluding that AI did not work for them.
The problem was never the tools. It was always the foundation.
That realisation is what Locus exists to solve. Build the foundational understanding that lets you evaluate, decide, and apply AI systematically first. Then, if you want it, build your system on top of that foundation.
How I Approach the Work
I come from a mechanical engineering background. The way I was trained to think is to break a system down to its fundamental components, understand how they interact, solve from first principles. It turns out to be exactly the right framework for thinking about AI.
AI is a system. It can be understood and applied. That is also why Locus OS is built with similar logic that runs a plant. Monitor what is happening, route the signal to the right place, act on it, feed the result back in. This is the logic the intelligence architecture runs on.
That approach runs through everything at Locus:
- First-principles thinking — I do not arrive with a pre-built playbook. I work through your specific situation from the ground up, because your problems are not the same as the last person I worked with.
- Real technical depth — I know the landscape because I have built in it. Local systems, cloud tools, agents. Not as a consultant observing from the outside, but as a practitioner building for myself.
- Holistic perspective — AI does not exist in isolation. It intersects with your processes, your goals, and how your business actually functions. I pull from mechanical engineering, business operations, and technical implementation to see the whole system, not just the AI component of it.
What I Believe
- The cost of execution is going to zero. The bottleneck is knowing what to solve.
- AI amplifies thinking, but only if you know how to apply it. It should not replace the thinking.
- Your IP is too important to rent. Build the understanding, own the capability.
- The same systematic approach used in engineering can give anyone a clear, usable framework for where AI applies.
- The goal of Phase 1 is to make myself unnecessary. When you are AI-fluent, you do not need me to tell you what is possible.
What Working With Me Looks Like
Locus runs on the same system we build together. Locus OS is not a product I designed theoretically and then started selling. I built it to run my own company, I use it every day, and everything I have learned from operating it goes into the version we build for your context. That is the proof of concept.

That also means I am selective. I take on clients where I am confident the engagement will produce real results. If I do not think we are the right fit, I will tell you directly and point you toward something that is.
